Setting the mood with Light

Guest post by Rochelle Hartigan, Brand Marketing Manager for GE Lighting

Your house reflects your design sensibilities down to the last throw pillow. The nesting dolls from a trip to Scandinavia are all lined up on the corner of your dresser, and the vintage vase you found at the flea market is brimming with fresh-cut flowers. There’s a place for everything and everything is in its place.

So, you’re done decorating.

But are you?

Lighting Matters

Unless you’ve already installed new lighting to match the mood for each space, the answer is no.

GE has introduced a new line of High Definition lighting that matches the right room to each space in your house.

Maybe you’re skeptical of applying an adjective usually associated with TVs to your lighting system, but high definition light is a real thing! GE’s HD bulbs have a higher CRI, or Color Rendering Index, which means they deliver greater color contrast and boldness than a standard bulb.

Making the change to HD light bulbs is an easy task, made even easier thanks to GE’s room-by-room system. Just think: with a few twists, you can completely transform any space in your house. GE’s HD bulbs come in three different tones, and each of those tones corresponds to a room that would most benefit from that kind of light.

You can use your lights to set the mood you’re going for in each individual area, whether it’s a clean, natural feel, or a more intimate atmosphere.

For instance, REVEAL™ is perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, craft and hobby rooms, and any other space where details matter and clarity counts. It’s GE’s best light because it’s HD+, thanks to a rare mineral called Neodymium, which, when added to the light bulb, creates a stronger separation in the way your eye views reds and greens. Colors appear more vivid and whites even more brilliant.

Are you going for a more cool and energizing vibe? Reach for the REFRESH™ bulb. The invigorating daylight effect brings out the best in cooler colors and is made for home offices, playrooms, and laundry rooms. You can even improve on Mother Nature herself and bring these bulbs outside. Truly an asset to any active space, REFRESH™ lights will keep you going.

And when you’re enjoying your down time, turn on RELAX™ bulbs. The warm light emphasizes richer colors like red and gold, which makes it perfect for cozy and low-key spaces such as bedrooms, dining rooms, and family rooms. The soft white light of the RELAX™ bulb will make every moment more comfortable.

Not only will these lights set the mood, they’ll help your wallet in the long run. GE’s HD LED bulbs last for 13 years and you can save as much as $81 on energy per bulb. You’ll have a positive impact on the environment, plus room in the budget for some blankets to go with those pillows.

Finishing our Bedroom with Vanity Lights and Tropical Touches

Getting our new house into shape has admittedly been slow going, but progress is being made… in the master bedroom at least! I’m lucky to have had good bones- it is spacious, with good light and lovely original hardwoods. Painting it palest blush pink (Farrow and Ball Middleton Pink, to be exact) brought some beautiful warmth, but the space still felt a little barren. So when I partnered with Orchard Supply Hardware to improve this room, I knew adding light and life would bring both the functionality I needed and Palm Springs ‘jungalow’ vibe I was craving.

My DIY Vanity

As cute as my vanity was before this project, it was not super functional. It’s tucked in the corner of the room, near my closet rather than the window- far from ideal makeup lighting. I needed Hollywood dressing room type lighting, without spending a zillion dollars- more like under a hundred. And with a little youtubing, some amateur electrician work on David’s part (have I mentioned what a good sport he is?), and some help from the kind employees at Orchard Supply Hardware in Culver City, we totally made it happen!

There are a zillion tutorials on YouTube for this project- just search ‘diy vanity lights.’ We got all the supplies at Orchard, picking up vanity light fixture panels, globe bulbs (never soft white- it reads too warm for makeup), short extension cords, a power strip, command strip picture hangers, and a lamp remote kit. For a quick summary, David cut off the receiving ends of the extension cords, and wired the plug ends to the base of the light fixtures. They attach to the walls with the command strips for no long-term damage, and the wires snake behind the desk to the remote base, which plugs into the power strip. As a note- we needed to Gorilla Glue 1/4″ inch thick strips of wood to the back of the light fixture panels, and attach the command strips onto that. It needed a little gap for the cord to pass through since the fixture I chose goes flat to the wall.

The lighting is SO SO GOOD, but the remote is probably my favorite part- I’ve been behaving like a toddler when flipping the lights in and off again. I love that it’s helpful for energy conservation, but it’s also such a little thrill of luxury so easily and inexpensively. And once the lights were up and on, I was all about living my best plant lady life.

Bringing the Room to Life

I decided pretty quickly that I wanted to bring the outdoors in- our complex is a lovely little desert garden oasis, full of palms and ferns, succulents and lots of greenery. In the pursuit of my greenhouse bedroom dreams, I might have gone a little crazy. If you consider making David drive slowly down side streets with a 10-foot-tall corn plant hanging out the window of our compact car a little much, then yes. But I don’t even care- beyond fresh air, plants bring me so much joy.

I’m especially obsessed with the dangly succulent hanging above the vanity. It’s called ‘string of pearls’ and I’m already looking forward to when it drapes all the way down around the mirror.

The pot is from Orchard Supply Hardware too- I just gave it a little upgrade. I cut off the jute and replaced it with golden chain (it’s on big spools at the store and sold by the foot) that I braided into a four-strand braid to add heft and visual interest.

I put plants all around my big floor mirror, and am loving the effect! But if you are looking closely- at my ficus especially- I’m due to fess up. I have the blackest of black thumbs. I’m a notorious plant murderer, of even the hardiest species. The only reason I feel comfortable bringing all these green beauties home is because I purchase my plants at Orchard, and their lifetime plant guarantee is a total lifesaver. And if you join their rewards program, Club Orchard, it keeps track of your receipts so you don’t even need to – you just go exchange your dead plant for a live one!!

And in the spirit of full transparency, that fiddlehead fern has dropped several leaves and in general seems rather displeased after being stuck in the backseat of my car, repotted, and moved about, so let’s all cross our fingers that I can avoid taking Orchard up on that return policy.

How I Created a Boho-Chic Balcony

Keyma is a lifestyle-blogger and full-time educator living in LA. She writes about fashion, beauty, health, and travel on her blog Style Weekender.

Hello there, Loves.

For today's post, I'm sharing with you my newly decorated balcony, in partnership with Orchard Supply Hardware. I have been itching to decorate my balcony and since summer is in full effect, I knew I had to do it now. I just returned from my vacation (Tulum) two days ago and I was so inspired by all the textures, fabrics, and contrast I saw in Tulum. Immediately upon returning I went directly to my local Orchard store to shop the items I knew would be perfect for my balcony decor.

I started off my week one happy gal, skipping the vacation blues, and enjoying my newly decorated space. Nothing serves more bliss to my life than the comfort and chicness of my home, my happy space. Walk with me as I share how I decorated this chic, mexican-moroccan-boho vibe city balcony.

My balcony was pretty much an empty space with a few plants I tried to keep alive but sadly failed. My guy and I did not spend much time out there. Actually our dog Marley (see his little self below) spends most of his time out there. He had the whole space to himself and he frolics around with his toys and owned that space. But oh, no more. It's now a cozy and chic spot ready for entertaining and relaxing.

One of my top priorities for my balcony was to bring life to the space. This meant, adding green plants or flowers. I opted for these thin leaves palms because they are low maintenance, gives a lot of greenery, will grow overtime and provide me with a beautiful privacy screen. I learned so much about my plant selection from the helpful member of Orchard Supply Hardware in the Nursery department. He was so informed, excited about plants, and really helped me to pick out plants that will serve my lifestyle, purpose, and taste. He took his time to find out what I liked, what I was looking for and realistically what will grow and give my space what it needed. The best part, there is a lifetime warranty on my plants. If they die for some reason, I can easily return them.

Just look at the instant life of that area (north end) once I added those palms; I also got all four pots. I went with two round green ones and two square brown ones for contrast. Love them!!!

On the south end of my balcony I decided on this beautiful and durable Westport Oversize Chair. It can easily sit one or two people. It goes with this gorgeous and functional Westport Ottoman with tray. I love that is serves as a table and an ottoman for additional seating when we do have a lot of guests. The cushions are very durable and I was informed by the excellent staff at Orchard Supply Hardware that it's easy to clean and the material on the chair is also great quality. I was contented to be affirmed about the quality and durability of what I was purchasing.

Next up, I got these two chic Barrel Strap Wicker Chairs in brown. Again, these are extremely high quality, wrapped in aluminum frame and coated with wicker, which will withstand all weather conditions. I added these Home is Where the Heart Is statement cushions and I think they look fabulous.

Orchard Supply Hardware has a wide variety of cushions to please all tastes. It was so hard to choose, but I ended up falling in love with these.

To add some texture to the space I went with these Tag Braided Jute Rugs in Natural. I bought two of them since I figured I could move them around later. They feel so great under my feet and I know my guests will be comfortable too.

At the west-side of my balcony, I really wanted to infuse a Morrocan vibe and create a space where I could really relax on the floor to a good book, a glass of wine, or playing a game of cards with friends. I was so inspired on my trip to Tulum and I brought this serape blanket back along with a dream catcher and a hammock just for my balcony.

I've always wanted to add string lights to my space. Maybe it's because I love Christmas and it's the best supplement to actual Christmas lights, or maybe it is the romantic vibe it gives.

I figured my balcony would not be complete without string lights and best decision ever!

I also added these two cute stools I found while on my way to check out and had to have them. Do you know why? They were also on sale and your girl cannot pass up a sale. I told you, Orchard Supply Hardware was going to be my perfect one-stop-shop. I didn't want to cram my space and I had thoughts of returning them, but decided to keep them because I can easily stack them on top of each other to store and create more space. I absolutely love them.

I really hope this post has inspired you to create a warm, cozy, chic, or lavish balcony or patio. It truly will help you to fall in love with your home all over again. You'll also spend much more quality time with yourself and your family. If you have kids, it's also a great way to spruce up your space and encourage them to spend time outside. As the weather changes and summer goes, you can easily add a mini heater (they have them at Orchard Supply) and still be able to enjoy your space all year round.

Bright Ideas: Use Accent Lighting to Set the Scene

Lighting your outdoor space is a no-brainer during the day, but if you’re planning to use your patio after sunset you’re going to need more than what mother nature provides.

Patio String Lights

String Lights

String lights are an outdoor entertaining staple. Everyone uses them, and for good reason. They add fun to just about any backyard, they’re available year-round, and they’re super easy to hang.

You can put them just about anywhere. Wrap them around trellises, trees, and umbrella poles. String them overhead or run them around the yard. And one of our favorite touches: use icicle lights on a banister, and let the light drip down the handrail.

If you’re throwing a theme party, you can even get string lights shaped like pineapples, globes, whatever you want.

Pineapple Lanterns

Lanterns and Luminaries

Want to set up a cozy nook, but don’t have any portable walls for your yard? No problem. Divide your space into conversation sets with patio chairs and lanterns. The little pools of light and comfy seating can make even big open spaces a more intimate feel.

Set out lanterns with candles, hurricane lamps with tea lights, or mason jars filled with battery operated lights. Put them on tables as centerpieces, light up foot paths, or just put them on the ground by the chairs. Just use battery-operated lights if you’re going to put them by anyone’s feet.  “Burning down the house” is a song, not a suggestion.

If you’re looking for a low-tech lighting option, torches are a fun, casual way to light a party. Just pull them up and move them where you want them.

Fire’s an instant attention-getter, so it’s a snap to create focal points. Flank the food table, back-light the bar, and outline the dance floor. Bonus? You can fill them with citronella oil and use them to keep your gatherings bug-free.

Just remember, however you decide to brighten your evening, the spotlight should always be on having fun.
